What is GRiT?

GRiT stands for Grandmasters in Training.
We believe every student has the potential to think critically, move with discipline, and grow intellectually.

In chess, to seize the initiative means to control of the direction of the game.

At GRiT, young minds learn to take control of their thinking, decisions, and growth—on and off the board.

GRiT Initiative is a Proud Affiliate of the US Chess Federation!

Beyond the Board

We are dedicated to creating a space where young minds flourish. By integrating structured chess instruction with a focus on social-emotional learning, we help students develop the critical thinking, resilience, and patience they need to thrive in every aspect of life.

Our Programs & Workshops

Private and Group Instruction

In-person and virtual lessons designed to build strong fundamentals, strategic thinking, and confidence—through structured, guided play.

Workshops  & Tournaments

Our workshops and tournaments and seasonal camps provide engaging, hands-on experiences that combine learning with competition.

Community Programs

Our community-based programs use chess to develop critical thinking and personal growth. Initiatives like Conscious Moves, currently running at the Kent County Juvenile Detention Center, create structured opportunities for participants to explore self-awareness, accountability, and intentional decision-making.

What our community is saying

The GRiT Effect

  • "My son has a hard time in new environments. However he felt so welcome and included. He came home each day explaining what he had learned. It was tailored to each kids needs. We highly recommend it!"

     4th Grade Parent, Grand Rapids

  • " Coach Wilson was very likeable. He's patient and grounded as he leads his class. Fantasitic class-management and engagement with his students throughout the lesson "

     Middle School Parent, Virginia

  • "Chess has improved my mental health. It has taught me about structure and consequences. I have also learnt that I can't always win and that's okay"
